The constant reference to civism is one of the most distinct characteristics of the urban history of Pereira. Similar to many Colombian cities, the ideology of civism assumes that there is a need to establish a kind of symbiosis between the city, its public spaces, and its citizens, in material as well as spiritual matters. In the case of Pereira, the author seeks to identify the most relevant aspects of the civic discourse which developed entities like the Improvement Society and the Rotary Club, through different written means, putting special emphasis on the moral values which the civic citizens (or ciudadanos de bien) must have exhibited in the process of transformation and modernization experienced throughout the 20th century

This paper aims to show the transition from Boyacá Sovereign State to Political and Administrative Department during the Regeneration period from 1886 to 1903. This process was accompanied by a set of economic, political and social reforms. These reforms consolidated a new national unity project based on the Constitution of 1886. The Regeneration was presented as a political project that changed the relations between State and society. This project also affected regional autonomy as a result of a dependency on central government. Regeneration is a stage where going from a federal system to a centralist one becomes evident, in order to build a model of citizen that responds to the dreamed construction of a unitary nation. The author bases her work on journalistic sources such as the Diario Oficial, El Boyacense, El Espectador, among others, and on a large bibliography on Federalism and Regeneration.

The objective of this work is to analyze the relationships of cooperation and conflict among the mining company MSX; the communities of San Pedro, Soledad, and San Luis Potosí; the new social movements; and the three levels of government involved. The mining company began operations in a gold and silver open-pit mine with the support of officials from the local, state, and federal governments. The inhabitants of these communities, backed by environmental groups and non-government organizations argued that the project contaminated sources of fresh water, while also perturbing the environment and the region’s ecology. In this manner the article analyzes the impact, the social interaction, and the conflict among the distinct actors from a local and social-environmental perspective, after the historical contextualization of the subregion and the development of the mining industry is presented.

This text interprets the founding of the Samacá Industrial Company “Factory of spun cotton and cotton fabrics” in the municipality of Samacá (Boyacá, Colombia). The article gives an account of the founding process, considered to be one of the first cases of the contemporary textile industry in Colombia; it analyzes the internal dynamic of the company from a jurisprudence and administrative perspective, in that way it offers a focus on the possible reasons related to its closing. Finally, the author responds to the question: Why did the departmental Boyacá government not support the process of industrialization of Boyacá through the textiles of Samacá? The study bases itself on primary materials and secondary sources for its interpretation

The essay offers an epistemological reflection on local history from the distinct historiographical revisions of the Latin American and European spheres. In a critical manner, the text analyzes the unavoidable elements of local history and makes manifest the dichotomous relationship of collective and individual singularity. In the same manner, they highlight the role of sources, the events, and their relationship with the role of protagonists or historical actors in a locality

In recent years, the history of the origins of Pereira has promoted a debate which questions the events surrounding the foundational act. The current article will give a retelling of the main topics and research problems which today provoke academic debate. Three are the guiding strands: debate presentation, historiographical argumentations, and the critical position on these. Could the history of Pereira have begun in 1863 when the founding act first mass was officiated, or in 1540 when the old city of Cartago was founded on the same site, where a little more than three centuries later the city of Pereira was created? Beyond establishing a founding date for the city of Pereira, the polemic allows one to see a history of representations and powers under tension as much by the actors of the period as by the new interpretations on the origins of a city.

From a quantitative perspective, the article deals with the economic historiography of the Valle del Cauca for the 19th and 20th centuries. The aim is to offer a sectorial approximation from the selection of a series of variables such as: topics, centuries and periods, and spaces. The intention is, in a critical style, to give an account of the level of development achieved by this historiography on the regional economy.

El texto en cuestión trata el problema de la relación entre los imaginarios identitarios de la región de Antioquia y las producciones intelectuales de las élites oriundas de la mencio-nada región, elaboradas entre los años de 1830 y 1920, consistentes principal-mente de textos e imágenes. La tesis del autor es que son dichas élites intelec-tuales las responsables de la creación y difusión de la idea de la "raza antioque-ña" fuertemente arraigada en la cultura de la región. Haciendo uso de las crea-ciones de importantes autores, pintores y fotógrafos antioqueños, relacionándo-los con el ambiente intelectual, social y político euroamericano, el autor se pro-pone responder a preguntas acerca del cómo surge la idea de una “antioqueñi-dad” y cuáles son los conceptos centrales que la definen. Se puede decir que es un libro de historia de los intelectuales, más que de historia de las ideas y cubre un terreno que, para la época y la región analizadas, es escasamente trabajado. El libro está dividido en siete capítulos, cada uno dividido en varias subseccio-nes. Cuenta además con una lista completa de anexos, fuentes y bibliografía utilizada.

The present text is part of the partial results of the inquiry carried out by the author on the documentary sources for the political history of Antioquia, 1900–1950. The idea is to point out, in the style of a balance sheet, the documental sources which exist in the region for the systematic approach of political history in the respective documental heritages, libraries, and documental centers of the city of Medellín. An attempt is made to offer a panorama of the state of the sources, their extent, and limitations, to contribute to the search and approximation of the research problems which allow one to enrich regional history

In the article at hand, the explicit factors of the economic crisis which affected Cauca during the first half of the 19th century, and it shows them as an effect of the economic processes developed during the colonial period. We see how the people of Cauca must have built companies in which they connected politicians and foreigners to develop the necessary infrastructure, to this way get the region out of the crisis in which it was plunged by the wars of independence and the string of civil wars that characterized the first years of the Republican Period. Finally, a vision of the effect of the wars on economic development is offered, proving through examples, how government workers, businessmen, military men, and politicians took advantage of the civil wars to benefit economically.

Sources consulted which were related with classical researchers and experts in Colombian economic, agrarian, and educational history and of the regional history of the department of Valle del Cauca, allow for one to infer that, up to now, the history of agricultural higher education in this department is unknown. These are the purposes of the article at hand: to examine the administrative policies which originated the aforementioned education in Valle del Cauca during the 1910-1934 period; to explore the educational through oriented towards the teaching of agricultural sciences in Valle del Cauca during the same period; and to analyze the background events which shaped the creation of the Palmira branch of the current Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of the National University of Colombia

The objective of the article at hand is to show the opinion and controversy created by the arrival of the Society of Jesus to Santiago de Cali, expressed in articles which were published in the newspapers El Sentimiento Democrático and El Ariete. The text explains how the religious presence of the Jesuits served to revive the conflict among the liberal and conservative parties in 1849 and 1850. The author contextualizes the problem form the distinct political tendencies and the role of “order,” which were manifested during the liberal government of José Hilario López. In particular, the fear the liberal factions had with regard to the impact of the Society in politics, New Granada education, and society in general; likewise, the role and the position of the conservatives in defense of members of a religious order and with regard to the liberal reforms of the times. Finally, the author exposits what the role was of the parents with regard to the presence of the Jesuits and their compliant with reference to the direction of the Colegio de Santa Librada in Santiago de Cali and the reaction of some democratic societies and liberal factions in the locality

The article analyzes, from the bound scores and manuscript works, among other sorts of sources, salon music and piano interpretation in Guadalajara de Buga (Valle del Cauca) between 1897 and 1930, in particular, the role played by the female pianists, the composers, and local directors. The author also studies reported musical composition and tendencies, the distinct rhythmic schemes of the waltz and the pasillo manifested in the writing of piano music. She identifies that for certain tunes such as the waltz, the pasillo, among others, the different ways of using the instrument and the keys which exist, and that repertoire harmony is made by the tonal environment. The piano is shown to be a differentiating factor, with regard to collectivity.

The author offers his reflection on the relationship between local history and hermeneutics from the following questions: Does hermeneutics have some role in the search for sources of information about the topic or object of research? What function can hermeneutics have in internal or external criticism of the documents and of the events? In a given moment, what should be interpreted? Is the hermeneutic act “particular” with reference to the production of the text? In this fashion the importance of hermeneutics in the work of the historian and as part of all of the historiographical process is considered, just as heuristics and criticism is.

The text offers a methodological reflection on the work of the Colombian historian Javier Ocampo López. The author exposits the technique for focuses with emphasis in the history of ideas, from the investigative experience of the teacher, whose works have been characterized by rigor in the implementation of the method and by regional and national historiographical contributions. The essay also offers a biographical description of the historian, describes the methodological process of the focus, supported in the technique of interviews and doctoral students’ experiences, and exposits in a reflective fashion, the conceptual definitions about time and the “historic rhythm” in its diverse variables–accelerated, cyclical, and of the structures.
